Allergy ghosts

November 8, 2013 by Laura 1 Comment

Something is wrong.  I can’t figured it out and it’s driving me nuts.  Mr. Naughty is having a bunch of
allergic reactions.

I haven’t changed anything recently.  We had a scare about 2 weeks ago with what I believe to be from olive oil.  (I still haven’t pin pointed the origin). The poor kid’s eyes and face puffed up and turned red.  He must have been miserable because he refused to eat or take a nap for the entire day.

Lately, I’m suspecting it maybe something more than just one allergy.  The problem is, with many mild food allergies, it’s a delayed reaction.  I can feed him the same meal for lunch and dinner.  Lunch time he’s fine.  But when dinner comes around he’s not interested in his meal and within 1 hour he starts to develop hives.

I’m so confused right now.

I really feel bad for him.  The poor guy 🙁  He’s been so miserable with many things lately.  His broken arm.  His hives.  His new molars.    Things keep coming at him from all directions.

Overall, he’s a very happy child.  He’s constantly smiling and laughing.  I can’t say he was always this way.
Before he was diagnosed with all his allergies, he was a very demanding colicky baby who would cry unless held or nursed for comfort.  He would wake up at night screaming every 45minutes.  I was so sleep deprived, I was angry.  (It takes a lot to get me mad, especially with kids).   I was going crazy. I would have to sooth him back to sleep for at least 20 minutes and then he’d be awake in another 45 minutes!  It was maddening.  This lasted for almost 2 months straight!
I suspected he had some type of food allergy by the time he was only 6 weeks old.  His stools were alway irregular and had a strange color to them.  So, I tried to eliminate dairy from my diet.  It seems to help, but only a little.   He finally had a flu vaccination that gave him a terrible rash all over his body.  We took him in and the doctored ordered food allergies tests, specifically for eggs.

The results were devestating…  He had been tested for over 60 different foods and 50 came back positive on some level.  We had results but really didn’t know what to do with them.  This was the genesis of going gluten free.  At the time, it seemed impossible to significantly modify our diets to be allergy compliant.  I went straight to the internet for information and resources.

We’ve basically come full circle.

I’m back on the web searching for new information related to xanthan gum allergies, olive oil, and possibly different species of apples.  All of theses things he’s had for months with no problems but seem to be related to his intermittent hives.

I’ll keep you posted.

In the meanwhile, I’m gearing up for Naughty’s 2nd birthday which is right around the corner.  So much for making him a cake…
