FARE Food Allergy Walk 2014 Milwaukee, WI

Calling all families with food allergies!  Did you know that FARE will be hosting a walk to fund raise money for food allergy research?  Save the date for next Sunday June 8, 2014 at Veteran’s Park in Milwaukee, WI.

FARE is a non-profit organization who’s mission is to find a cure for food allergies and to keep individuals with food allergies safe and included.  This is your chance to help anyone you love advance the research needed to find a cure and spread awareness for food allergies.

As you are well aware, my family has multiple food allergies.  My oldest son, suffers from a peanut allergy and possibly sea food/shellfish.  My youngest has a whole grocery list of food allergies but the main ones are allergies to: wheat, egg, soy, peanut,  ALL tree nuts, seafood, shellfish, sunflower, sesame and poppy.

I was at Trader Joe’s this morning looking for new product to try.  I was looking at new fruit bar made by Trader Joe’s with just 2 ingredients.  One of the friendly workers came over and starting talking about how great they were.  As we talked about food I found that she too, was managing a bunch of food allergies.  Her food allergies were more severe in some ways and difficult to mange since many of her food allergies were not one of the top 8 food allergens and therefore isn’t included for allergen statements.  I could complete empathize how difficult it was for her to eat out at restaurants and have to call ahead and speak with the kitchen to find safe food based on the menu.  We had a nice conversation about how family gatherings were always interesting because everyone in her family would have to bring their own food.  She also carries her own Epi-pen/Auvi-Q.  (Don’t forget both of these companies have a $0 Co-pay card you can find on their websites.  Click here for Epi-Pen and here for Auvi-Q)
After speaking with her I realized that food allergies really are on the rise.  Some of the other workers heard our conversation and chimed in that they too suffered from food allergies and food intolerances.
